The History of Studio Group

The Studio Group originated in 1935 as a small group of women painting together. Members met weekly to paint, study art, and participate in classes and critiques. For many years studio space was rented. In 1950 when then owner Stanley Arthurs died, member Ellen duPont Wheelwright purchased the studios for use by Studio Group members. In 1964 the studios were purchased by the Studio Group, Inc.

From (1937-1971) the Studio Group operated the Clothesline Fair on the steps of the public building in downtown Wilmington until it was turned over to the Wilmington Flower Market. The group also managed the “Picture of the Week” exhibit in the Hotel DuPont lobby which featured area artists.

Now one of the oldest continuous painting groups in the United States, the group continues to meet regularly for classes and to paint. Art exhibits of Members’ work are held during the Wilmington Art Loop each first Friday of the month from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. (except in January, July and August). These exhibits are free to attend, refreshments are served and original artwork is available for purchase.

The Studio Group is dedicated to it’s mission: “To preserve the legacy of Howard Pyle by maintaining his historic studios and engaging in educational and charitable programs”. A non-profit organization, The Studio Group is committed to ensuring the future of the Howard Pyle Studio as a resource for artists and the community.
